What is Emergency Contraception?
Planned Parenthood says already available in
41 other countries without a prescription
Description
Uses
The Morning After Pill (actually there are two pills) is emergency
contraception (EC), a backup method to birth control. It
is in the form of two Levonorgestrel (a hormone) pills that
are taken by mouth after unprotected sex. The Morning
After Pill can
reduce a woman’s risk of pregnancy when taken as directed if
she has
had unprotected sex - studies have shown it
reduces the odds of getting
pregnant by 75% to 89%. Formerly only available by prescription in the
United States (known as Plan B), it was recently approved by
the FDA for sale over the counter (without a prescription).
How Does It Work?
The Morning After Pill works like other birth control pills to prevent
pregnancy by primarily stopping the release of an egg from the
ovary
(ovulation). It also disrupts
fertilization (joining of the egg and sperm) and inhibits implantation
(attachment of a fertilized egg to the uterus). If a fertilized egg is
already implanted
prior to taking EC, it will not work. The Morning After Pill
(EC)
does not protect you from sexually transmitted
diseases--including HIV and AIDS.
Contents
levonorgestrel - 0.75 mg per pill
Dosage and Administration
The first dose of the Morning After Pill (EC)
must be taken as soon as possible and within 72 hours of having
unprotected sex, and the second dose 12 hours following the first, to
be effective.
Contraindications
Some drugs may decrease the effectiveness of EC (the Morning After
Pill), which may result in pregnancy. Before taking EC, talk to your
doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines: a
barbiturate such as amobarbital (Amytal), butabarbital (Butisol),
mephobarbital (Mebaral), secobarbital (Seconal), or phenobarbital
(Luminal, Solfoton); a seizure or pain medicine such as
phenytoin (Dilantin) or carbamazepine (Tegretol); or rifampin
(Rifadin, Rimactane). As with taking any medicine, you should
talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns.
Warnings and Precautions
Adverse Effects
The most common side effects are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue,
headache, changes in menstrual bleeding (spotting, earlier or later
menstrual period, heavier or lighter menstrual bleeding, longer or
shorter menstrual period), dizziness or breast tenderness.
Side effects other than those listed here may also occur.
Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual
or that is especially bothersome.
Is the emergency contraception safe ?
The Morning After Pill has been approved by the US FDA as a safe and
effective birth control medication and now can be purchased without a
prescription (for those aged 18 and over).
